First whale sighting!

On our way to the amazing island of Iranja (to learn more about our excursions, click here), we were fortunate to spot the first whales of the 2024 season!

Every year, the queens of the ocean make their way up to Nosy Be, leaving behind the icy waters of Antarctica where they have been feeding for months on krill and small fish. Humpback whales travel 7,000 km to reproduce and give birth at Nosy Be between August and November.

Our boat slowly approached (to learn more about our respectful approach, click  here), and all cameras captured the unique details of Megaptera novaeangliae’s flukes.

Whether we had cameras or not, our minds are now filled with the grace of these magnificent creatures. Most of us couldn’t help but smile so wide, we were almost in disbelief. A 35-ton animal shared this special moment with us:

The mother and her calf put on a marvellous aquatic ballet. The juvenile imitated the adult by jumping. Thats how the calves are learning to move around in the gigantic ocean that has become their home.

A few days earlier, some lucky divers (if you want to dive, too, click here) heard the males singing underwater to attract the females and ward off other competitors.

This unique moment marks the start of the season and we look forward to future encounters. Join us for a thrilling moment!
